What I learned from level testing in Krav Maga
As the year begins, it’s important to take a step back and reflect on our personal growth over the past 12 months. One way to do this is by conducting a self-evaluation, examining which areas we have excelled in and where we fell short. It’s also important to consider why we achieved certain results and what actions we can take in the upcoming year to reach our desired outcomes.
In many ways, martial arts training can serve as a microcosm of the outside world. People from all walks of life come together and learn to communicate with their bodies. They learn how to build trust with a complete stranger and set clearer and healthier boundaries while they build skills and improve their strength and ability to move. Their bodies change, and subsequently, their minds change.
Checkpoints, similar to level testing in martial arts, play a vital role in growth and development. They serve as a measure of progress and skill level, and provides a clear goal for us to work towards. Achieving a new belt rank through these tests can bring a sense of accomplishment and pride. Additionally, the process of testing can also help to improve focus, discipline, and self-confidence.
Krav Maga classes require practitioners to demonstrate specific skills and knowledge, but it also requires them to demonstrate qualities such as focus, discipline, and perseverance. This process can be similar and parallel to life- a journey of personal development, with each test representing a step forward on the end goal.
One of the most important lessons that we can learn from failure is the importance of perseverance. Many times when I tested at the practitioner level; I was asked to preform a technique but didn’t remember it to details. I made mistakes. The feedback I got from my instructor was uncomfortable, but I learned from it, and I never forgot how to preform these techniques again.
When we fail, we are faced with the choice of giving up or pushing through and trying again (I honestly never thought giving up was an option so I was only left with one choice, moving forward!). Those who choose to push through and keep trying will ultimately be the ones who succeed in the end.
Another important lesson that we can learn from failure is the importance of resilience. When we fail, it can be easy to become discouraged and lose hope. However, those who are able to bounce back and keep moving forward will ultimately be the ones who come out on top.
As we learn from our failures, it is also important to learn from our successes. When we pass a test or achieve a goal, we should take the time to reflect on what we did right and what strategies we used to achieve our success. This will help us replicate our success in the future and continue to grow and improve.
One of the most important tests that we will face in life is the test of diversity. Life is a diverse and dynamic experience, and we must be able to adapt and respond to the many different people and situations that we will encounter. Those who are able to navigate this diversity and connect with others from different backgrounds will be the ones who are able to succeed in today’s globalized world.
Tests in life aren’t easy and they are meant to teach us how far we can go, they shape us and make us stronger. Remember that there is no guarantee in life and things may not always go your way, but it is how we respond to these challenges that will ultimately determine our success. We must approach each test with a positive attitude, an open mind, and a willingness to learn and grow.
In conclusion, life will always bring us tests, but it is how we respond to these tests that will determine our ultimate success. By learning from our failures and celebrating our successes, we can continue to grow and improve throughout our journey. Remember, life is a journey and we should embrace every test as an opportunity to learn and become better versions of ourselves.
